How to Get Your Business Into Google AI Overviews?

How to get your business into Google AI Overviews: six factors that decide AI citations

To appear in Google AI Overviews, your page needs to be readable by crawlers, answer the question directly in its opening lines, and belong to a brand that other sites mention. A high Google ranking helps, but it’s no longer required. Ahrefs found that only 38% of AI Overview citations come from the organic top 10 (863,000 keywords studied).

That’s good news for smaller businesses. You can be quoted before you’ve won the ranking battle.

The six things that decide whether you get cited

1. Crawlers can actually read your page.
The AI crawlers behind ChatGPT and Perplexity don’t run JavaScript. If your content sits inside tabs, sliders or “read more” accordions, these crawlers can’t see it. Also check that your hosting or CDN isn’t blocking them. Many block AI crawlers by default.

2. The answer comes first.
Put the direct answer in the first two sentences, then explain. AI systems pull out the answer. They skip the introduction.

3. You cover the follow-up questions.
When someone asks about cost, they also want to know about timelines, risks and alternatives. Pages that answer those follow-ups get picked up for more queries.

4. Your brand is mentioned elsewhere.
An Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands found brand mentions correlated with AI visibility about three times more strongly than backlinks did (0.664 vs 0.218). Reviews, directories, Reddit threads, podcasts and local press all count.

5. The page is fresh.
AI-cited pages are on average about 26% newer than typical top-10 pages (Ahrefs). Put a visible “Last updated” date on each page and update it every quarter.

6. Real facts, from a real person.
Include named statistics with named sources, and a named author with real credentials. “Studies show” gets skipped. “According to Ahrefs” gets quoted.

What this mean for local businesses?

Google is replacing many traditional map packs with AI-generated local results that show fewer businesses. Search Engine Land reported in 2026 that AI local packs showed only 32% as many unique businesses as traditional map packs.

So your Google Business Profile still matters, but it’s no longer enough on its own. Your website and your mentions around the web decide whether you’re one of the few businesses named.

A 30-day starting plan

Week Do this
1 Check that AI crawlers get through to your site (ask your developer to check the server logs)
2 Rewrite the opening two sentences of your five most important pages as direct answers
3 Add an FAQ to each of those pages, answering the questions customers actually ask you
4 Get listed on two or three directories and review sites in your industry

Frequently asked questions

Is AI Overview optimisation different from SEO?
It builds on SEO. The foundations are the same, but structure, freshness and brand mentions carry more weight.

Do I need an llms.txt file?
There’s no credible evidence that it helps yet. It doesn’t hurt either, but spend your time on the six points above first.

How long does it take?
The technical fixes can show up within weeks. Being cited regularly usually takes three to six months of consistent publishing and mentions.

Can I pay to appear in AI Overviews?
No, not in the organic answer. Be careful with anyone who says they can guarantee it.
